I've always loved to travel.
Even when I was stuck in my room, I used to pretend I was embarking on some grand adventure to some busy city. Luckily, I didn't have to pretend too often - I usually was on some grand adventure to some busy city. My family took me all over the place - San Francisco, Tampa, New York City, Boston, Memphis, Phoenix, San Antonio - we were always on the go. From the time I was two years old I loved being surrounded by the swirling psychedelic carpets of sleezy inns and motels, the whiz of fellow motorists passing by on Americas interstates and the satisfaction that comes with successfully finding your bag at baggage claim.
Simply put, I love to travel.
But as much as I loved to travel, I loved coming home. Home with suitcases full of tacky souveniers and rolls upon rolls of undeveloped film. I loved being able to share the memories of my most recent urban conquest with those who were not lucky enough to travel with me. I was so enthralled with the idea of bringing home every sight and sound I'd just experienced, that I decided that I would be a travel writer.
I was determined to someday write a book detailing every corner of America...every tasty cafe, every cool evening jazz spot, the comfiest hotel beds and the most beautiful sceinic views. I would set out on every vacation with a giant analog camera, a huge camcorder and a pad and pencil.
But times change....well....sort of.
After a brief three year hiatus from the open road, I discovered a little thing called the Internet. In a few days, I will be embarking on a trip to Chicago not with a back seat full of film canisters, pencil sharpeners and blank VHS tapes, but with a tiny digital camera, mini DV recorder and a laptop....all of which can fit in the front seat with me.
Now, I no longer have to wait to get home to show the world my beautiful photos - I can just upload them to this blog. My "travel anecdotes" can now be told in real time and the notion of a "book deal" sounds quaint and outdated. This is what this blog is about - not so much my vacation, but about you coming on vacation with me without even having to leave your desk.
Bon Voyage, Mon Ami.
